It took me 15 months to leave home.

I received a call from my Navy recruiter the day I drove home from VT that I had been accepted into AOCS. My dad and I drove to Richmond the following week for me to officially join, but I had to wait for an open slot. I was told it would be at least three months, so I took a manual labor job while I waited it out.

It kept getting pushed, and pushed, and pushed...until I receive a call there was a class slot, so I quit my job and started running every morning, and heading to an area lake for swimming/treading water every afternoon. That worked, and I was in the "top third" of my class physically when I did my "in times."

Can't thank my parents enough for putting up with me for those 15 months. That allowed me to pay down my college loan (I paid 100% of my college expenses) while having free room and board. My parents knew my predicament, and saw I was working in "good faith" (i.e. not doing any heavy partying)...so they were OK with me staying there.

But I understand Monk's situation. He wants to motivate his kid to become an adult.
